Crazy man elected by few was standing in the way of the governments stimulus package. This bothers me. Let alone that he has a hand in anything that the liberals block in the senate, in order to get it through. Let's discuss this first year government subject in NCAP.

I agree.

I find it disturbing that one man, elected by a small few, can have so much power.

I don't see any real solution though. Generally, our parliamentary system operates quite effectively. Unless each party allows the senators to determine their own vote, this type of scenario will continue to repeat itself.

It's the nature of the system.

What makes it worse is that Xenophon has some fairly extreme interests, and we're seeing those interests manifest themselves in the way he views legislation. From what I recall, he said he'd block the governments internet censorship legislation unless there were some anti-gambling incentives in there. Assuming that the government had a mandate to protect the children by censoring the internet, not many people really elected Xenophon to smack legislation out of parliament unless it pleases him.

I don't mind it. Let us not be blinded into thinking that Xenophon and his 14or so of the south australia electorate blocked the bill. Furthemore Xenophon got 14.78 percent on the first count, he well and trully deserves the place in parliament, he's no Steve Fielding harvesting preferences from Dems, libs and labor to win from 1.9%. I think if he starts a federal party (a real party, not no pokies) he might be the man that kills the Greens like the Greens did the dems. He's shown incredible competency with the media, somehow getting on even level or so it is made to seem with the greens whom have five times the voting power he does and makign Steve Fielding look very novice.

The problem is that any party he created would be inextricably linked to him as a personality, therefore:
1. Would die the second he retired.
2. Would find it hard to get traction outside SA.

That said it's not improbable he'll pull someone else up with him in 2010.

EDIT: Actually I withdraw that. It would come down to where preferences go, as anyone on a Xenaphon ticket would be lucky to pull 1/2 the vote he does.

I think he also wished to advance his political carreer its a gamble but if it pays off his "the defender of the murry darling basin". I do not trust him he looks like a shonky salesman or a wrecking yard owner.

Greens won't be killed, but it'd be nice to see a libertarian party on the right flank.

I like Xenophon on this issue, instead of copulating he should he asked that one third to one half of the pay outs be given to bring forward the Murray-Darling basin spending.

We can't F---in' give out hand outs whilst we watch our ecology destroyed! These pay outs represent an unsustainable populist move, and I hate it as much as I hated the lack of infrastructure spending by the libs.

P.S. Congrats to the greens to lessen the $950 to $900, but it's not enough!

I thought I heard something about the payouts going to all workers, not just those who paid tax in 2007-08. i.e. those who earned <$6000/annum will be eligible.

I'm aware of this. I was referring to the potential of him running someone else in the alternate years on a Xenaphon ticket.

I suspect for a long while into the future third parties in Australia will grow to a position of monopolising the crossbench, perhaps get afew seats in the house, plateau and then decline to be replaced by another third party.
