Anyone applying for Nursing for next year? Which Uni? What do you wanna do once you graduate?

I'm applying for CSU (Bathurst), Wollongong, Canberra and Western Sydney (Bankstown) respectivly. At CSU, I can do Nursing combined with Clinical Practice (Paramedic), which sounds great!

After I graduate, I'm hoping to work in rural areas, as well as Bathurst or Dubbo Base, maybe eventually going into the Royal Flying Doctors after getting a Graduate Diploma in Midwifery.

Join the Air Force, maybe?

I was even looking into applying for graduate Medicine :)

I've just been looking into it heaps latley, and there is soooo much I can do with my degree (if I get it ;))

What is everyone elses plans?

Sounds exciting!!! I am doing Commerce/Economics @ Canberra-totally different to nursing though :) Just want to say that Nursing has a LOT of post graduate courses which you can tailor to your interest. Was listening to the news the other day , the ACT Health has approved a new course @ Uni of Canberra called Master of Nurse Practioner (or something). When u do that you are like a 'mini doctor' - can issue drugs etc..

Good luck!!

but i so dont know what uni to go to, any suggestions?
I heard UTS was good, so im keen on going there but yeh don't know.

yeh i also thought about paramedics, but heard it was very competitive to get into.

After that, i want to specialise into midwifery, then hopefully move my way up the chain :)

It was OK. It's a 19th century orphange.. so it thought it was kinda.. spooky. But then, if I was to go; it's be at Bankstwon, Campbelltown or Hawkesbury. Not Parra ;) But it seemed OK - the lectures and such. The Occupational Therapy course really took my attention.. after the Sydney and UTS open days coming up, I'm think I might be changing my prefs and putting OT in ;) Or even Speech Pathology or Physio :p

Ah okay, seems alright then.
I've only been to the banktown campus before, that seemed not to bad. Yeh i'll be definately going to the UTS open day.
I dont know much about occupational therapy, but speech pathology is in my preferences... although right at the end.
Whats occupational therapy about?

Pretty much, teaching people to do every day things -- usually after they've had a stroke, serious accident. You can do industrial stuff to.. It's pretty much physical rehabilitation. I'm thinking of maybe Physio as well, but I've gotta have a look at Sydney first :D

Speech Pathology sounds good too.. You going to the Sydney one the same day as UTS?

I went to both the uts and syd open days yesterday.
I didn't really like the syd's mallet st campus, and for some reason didnt really feel comfortable there. i went to its mini lecture/session to find out more about nursing at syd, and wasn't too impressed either hehe. But I did enjoy going to uts, that was heaps good, and therefore more likely to put my no.1 pref as uts, 2nd being uws.
Did you go, if so what did you think?

I loved UTS, I spoke to a lecturer and a student.. I'm having a very hard time decideding between UTS and CSU ATM... I loved both.

Sydney sucked the big one. I liked the medicine faculty (I'm considering doing Graduate Medicine following my nursing degree..) and the lady I spoke to really pushed me further into that direction. As for Mallet St.. It would be a pain in the arse to get to everyday, and I didn't like the lecturers or academics. The aboriginal lady was really nice thou.. apart from here, I've turned even further away from Sydney than before ;)

Syd Uni is apparently the best for health science but ... you said you weren't impressed with the nursing at syd uni...I'll make no more comment.
I am considering nursing too but at Syd uni and as last preference

why does Sydney suck big time? I heard that they were great for health science stuff. what's wrong with it? (note: I am asking out of curiosity & in attempting to defend it) Why do you turn further away from Sydney?

Well, I'm comparing to CSU and UTS. USYD doesn't have nearly as much 'hands on' experience in comparrison, and in nursing, clinical work is of the upmost importance (well, to me anyways :D). The lecturers at Sydney sounded like they were sprouting off '10 reasons to come to Sydney' rather than answering my questions direct. And it would be such a pain in the arse to get to every day ;) (then again, so would Kuring-Gai ;))

Where as, UTS the lecturers seemed so much more approchable - I spoke to both Nursing and International Studies, as well as the students, which certinally helpd being able to speak to people actually doing the course. The same applied at CSU, the atmosphere in general is so much more relaxed :D.

Plus, my reasons for tossing up between UTS and CSU come down to what I can combine my degree with, ie at CSU I can do

B.Nursing/B.Clinical Practice (paramedic)
B.Nursing/B.Early Childhood Education

and UTS has

B.Nursing/B.Arts in International Studies (and then I can do Indonesisa or Thailand)

And, of cause, the fees rising at Sydney ;)

But, like I said, I really liked the Medicine Faculty and am certinally applying for it at the end of my degree :)
