Hi all,

Has anyone done PLT with UWS? How would you rate it?
I'm a LPAB student and according to the info provided by UWS, I can commence PLT once I have completed 12 LPAB subjects. That would mean I can do PLT and LPAB concurrently.

Any views would be much appreciated.

PLT Course Information
PLT @ UWS

"where theory meets practice"

If you have successfully completed 12 core LLB units in your Bachelor
of Laws degree or Diploma of Law then you are eligible to start your
PLT with us.

The University of Western Sydney is accredited by the Legal
Practitioners Admission Board to provide Practical Legal Training
through our Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice course.

Our course has been designed by legal practitioners, and is taught by
currently practicing legal academics, to ensure that students make a
smooth transition from legal student to legal practitioner.

The course offers the benefit of both face-to-face intensive tuition
and electronic distance education.

The Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice ("GDLP") comprises the
following subjects:

F7030 Professional Legal Skills - 20 credit points
F7031 Legal Practice: Ethics and Management - 20 credit points
F7032 Transactional Legal Practice - 20 credit points
F7033 Litigious Legal Practice - 20 credit points
F7034 Professional Legal Practice (Placement) - (no credit points)

About the subjects:

F7030-Professional Legal Skills (Pre requisite to F7031)
F7031- Legal Practice: Ethics and Management (Pre requisite to F7032 & F7033)
F7032-Transactional Legal Practice
F7033- Litigious Legal Practice
F7034- Professional Legal Practice (Placement)
COSTS OF COURSE
ELIGIBILITY AND PROGRESSION
FURTHER INFORMATION

F7030-Professional Legal Skills (Pre requisite to F7031)
The subject includes modules on legal research, statutory
interpretation, writing and drafting skills, negotiation, interviewing
and advocacy skills.

It is offered intensively over 10 days of face-to-face teaching and
includes 7 days of self-directed activities. (Summer & Spring).

F7031- Legal Practice: Ethics and Management (Pre requisite to F7032 & F7033)
This subject introduces students to legal practice by covering topics
such as trust and office accounting, legal practice management and a
practical exploration of the legislation governing legal practitioners
and how it manifests itself in practice.

This subject can be undertaken either in intensive mode over a five
week period in summer session which includes 30 hours of self-directed
activities or during a normal semester (Summer, Autumn or Spring).

F7032-Transactional Legal Practice
Both Transactional Legal Practice and Litigious Legal Practice are
taught by The College of Law on behalf of UWS via innovative
electronic coursework. Students can do these subjects "remotely".
Attendance in person at UWS will only be required on a handful of
occasions.

The modules in Transactional Legal Practice include Property Practice,
Wills and Estate Planning and Business Law Practice.

Activities will include will drafting and residential conveyancing.

The duration of this subject is 16 weeks. (Quarter 1, Autumn & Spring).

F7033- Litigious Legal Practice
Like Transactional Legal Practice this subject is also offered
electronically with only a handful of appearances on campus required.

Students will gain invaluable practical experience in modules such as
Civil Litigation Practice, Criminal Practice and Family Practice.

Activities will include interlocutory proceedings, drafting a "no bill
application" and a "brief to appear".

The duration of this subject is 16 weeks and may be done concurrently
with Transactional Legal Practice. (Quarter 1, Autumn & Spring).

F7034- Professional Legal Practice (Placement)
Sometimes called "Stage 2" this subject is the placement component,
which needs to be undertaken in a legal environment. This subject can
only be commenced after F7031 Legal Practice Ethics and Management. An
application for approval of the placement must first be submitted to
the PLT committee before undertaking the placement. The application
form is available on-line at
www.uws.edu.au/about/acadorg/clb/sl/courses/plt

Please note that the Placement must be approved by the University and
that it is subject to rules which can be obtained from the University.
The placement does not carry any credit points.

Students are required to complete a 9 or 15 week placement period. It
may be possible to obtain a maximum of 5 weeks credit if you worked in
a legal environment up to 1 year before your enrolment in the Graduate
Diploma in Legal Practice.

Students are also required to keep a logbook documenting their
placement in accordance with the Rules.

COSTS OF COURSE
Each subject costs $1,600, except for Professional Legal Practice
where no fee is payable.

There is also a $300 fee payable to The College of Law for enrolment
and materials. Hence, the total cost for the course is $6,700.00.

There are also normal student fees.

As of 1 January 2002, the Commonwealth Government introduced the
Postgraduate Education Loan Scheme "PELS". Accordingly, you may use
"PELS" to finance your Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice. Please
contact the student centre for more information about PELS.

ELIGIBILITY AND PROGRESSION
Prospective students need to have completed 120 credit points of core
LLB (i.e. 12 core LLB units or 12 LPAB Diploma of Law subjects) before
enrolling in a PLT unit.

You must have successfully completed "Professional Legal Skills" AND
"Legal Practice, Ethics & Management" before enrolling into the
"Transactional Legal Practice" and/or "Litigious Legal Practice".

i don't see how coz i don't think he has done his PLT..... he's doing B Laws atm...

i don't think there's anyone on here who has actually done the PLT..

maybe give the student centre a call - its run by students so you only talk to students and i know they have a range of people from a range of courses there answering phones so it's worth a try:)

I don't know if this will help but when I went to UWS open day I was talking to a law student who had just finished her B laws and she said that if you do certain electives and do these skills courses at UWS, then u compete parts of your PLT anfd reduce the number of hours of the practical compondent, I think you can do most of it, but not all of it...

I don't think thats helpful but you could ring them up and I'm sure they'll let you know :)

Hi Supa,

I have limited knowledge on the PLT although being a former DipLaw student, PLT was an important bit of information we had to grasp.

As you would be aware Supa, UWS is one of the few Universities offering the PLT, most people still prefer the College of Law although there are plans (and I think this is already happening) to have cross-intstitutional study with them.

PLT at UWS had undergone a re-vamp and more information I gather will be released soon.

From what I gathered you can study both concurrently, however the LPAB course does put ethics subjects towards the end. From the pre-reqs, generally you would need to have done that prior to admission - you will need to clarify this.

All the best supa with the LPAB and hope to see you in practice!

Melsc and Angel,

You both should have received the confirmation email... hmm.... you can try posting.

Jono A,

I am still confused. Are you now a UWS law student doing LLB program or are you a LPAB student with LEC completing the Diploma in Law?
What's your story? Care to share here?
