Hi, i was wondering how overload works? do they normally let you overload? (By 6 units). Bringing the total to 30 uoc? The reason is, I failed a course in first year which is pushing back everything by one. So at the end of 4 years, ill be trailing by one course only. can i just overload that in my last session (course is also not available in summer) and graduate at the right time? Is that a good reason for overload?

also, how many units can you do over the summer? 24?

finally for elec engg, in 4th year, can you do elec 4123 whilst doing elec 3115? taking into consiration all other 3rd year courses are completed. the pre req for 4123 is 'all 3rd year core courses'. is 3115 a 'core course'?

and finally, for L3 electives, since some of them do not need pre requisites, can i do them in my second year? Would i find it hard to understand if i do it too early?

Thanks a tonne.
(Oh and one more thing, eet does not run any summer courses...anyone know why?)

finally for elec engg, in 4th year, can you do elec 4120 whilst doing elec 3115? taking into consiration all other 3rd year courses are completed. the pre req for 4120 is 'all 3rd year core courses'. which ones are these?
Overload works differently for different schools. E.g for commerce you can't overload (that's what ppl been saying on the forum).

Assuming you are taking elec engg, then you can overload by submitting a application to the school office by week 2 of the semester. Based on your previous academic standing they usually let you overload by 6 units. Since you can't enrol > 27UOC via myunsw, you must do so via school office.

Keep in mind that changing classes become a hassle.

For summer, I think you can take 18uoc.

Since the prereq for elec 4120 is 3117 + 120UOC (5 complete semesters) so i guess you can do it along with 3115.

Note: elec4123 is the one with 'all 3rd year core courses', which are all ELEC3xxx courses. So which one are you referring?

sorry was refering to 4123. my bad. i edited the post. what about the L3 and summer courses bit.

also, the L4 electives in 4th year, can i do one course from each group or do all the 4 L4's have to be from the same? And if i do complete a group, does it say in my transcript or cert. that im specialized in that particular group?

Thanks for previous reply gman.

Hm....... unfortunately I don't have the all details, but i know people who are taking the pre-reqs at the same time as thesis in 2006, the only catch is you must be in the final year to do that so.... I think you can do the 3115->3105 course in final year. However you must talk to the academic advisor before hand.

I don't think EE runs summer course anymore from last year onwards...

All L3 courses have pre-req, except whoever printed the program structure didn't put them in.

For COMP3XXX, you will need to complete COMP1921 at the minimum.

For MATH3411, the old requirement is completion of discrete mathematics... so probably you will need to complete Maths 2A or 2B.

For SOLA3540, I think it was ElectroMag... let me check on that

You probably wouldn't find it hard to cope with at second year, but you will need to spend a lot more time (like no part-time job and stay home do assignments 24/7)

This is what I would like to know as well, but my take on that is you pick any of the four from ALL not just the group... the grouping I tihnk is to help you identify which area you would like.

Don't worry about L4 subjects until you complete second years and think about what to pick for L3 ... I think you just completed first year yeah? It is too early to worry about them.. hopefully they give more informations in the coming times.

A question though, are the overloading rules the same as for Fac of Science?

So if we wish to overload we should just head to our science student centre?

Yes, when i went to overload, i initially emailed them. They told me to write a letter saying i take responsibility for overloading etc. etc, then sign it and hand it to them. You can overload 3 uoc without issue though

Cheers mate!

Hm talking of the failing issue. What about if for example I failed a course, and I'd have to retake it, would that add to my total Eftsl load?

Since I think I read somewhere uh inside the Govt sites that they only give sufficient eftsl for me to complete my degree? (which in effect might make me pay for that whole course without any help from the govt)

I'll clear it up. The 7 years of EFTSL is not worth worrying about since I doubt you would actually need that time to complete a 3 yr degree. You would be kicked out before than (excluded for 2 years to be precise). Rekkusu, you will be fine. I think you have been reading too much MSO ;)

do you know how it works for engg? can we overload 3uoc without any issue. So, do we still have to inform them about the overload or can i just go ahead and do it?

thanks

also, there is a list for elec engg, or maybe the whole of engg, which shows which gen eds you cannot do. anyone know where i can get a hold of this? and it says that each of the 4 has to be from a different school. what if i did one gen ed of 6uoc from one school? is that allowed?

Total coolness! Thanks Iruka & Velox! :p I suppose if I had some really bad luck with my exams I might fail!

BOS' Gen Ed FAQ is quite helpful, I used that myself :p As for the specificities:

Objectives of the General Education Program
- The following objectives were approved by the Council of the University in December 1994 and with some minor changes in 2005:
- To provide a learning environment in which students acquire, develop, and deploy skills of rational thought and critical analysis.
- To enable students to evaluate arguments and information.
- To empower students to systematically challenge received traditions of knowledge, beliefs and values.
- To enable students to acquire skills and competencies, including appropriate written and spoken communication skills.
- To ensure that students examine the purposes and consequences of their education and experience at University, and to foster acceptance of professional and ethical action and the social responsibility of graduates.
- To foster among students the competence and the confidence to contribute creatively and responsibly to the development of their society.
- To provide structured opportunities for students from disparate disciplines to interact cooperatively within a learning situation.
- To provide opportunities for students to explore discipline and paradigm bases other than those of their professional or major disciplinary specialisation through non-specialist courses offered in those other areas.
- To provide an environment in which students are able to experience the benefits of moving beyond the knowledge boundaries of a single discipline and explore cross and interdisciplinary connections, and cross-cultural contexts.
- To provide a learning environment and teaching methodology in which students can bring the approaches of a number of disciplines to bear on a complex problem or issue.
And pasting Timmy's extremely useful info:

  • 12UOC of General Education
  • Maximum of 3UOC from your "home" faculty (exception is; FCE students cannot do any FCE General Education courses)
  • Maximum of 6UOC from any one faculty
  • Maximum of 6UOC can be substituted from mainstream courses (pending approval)
