Hi everyone!

For AOS I'm studying Romulus, My Father and it's non-fiction prose. I'm just wondering if it's a bad idea to have one of my related texts also non-fiction? I'm thinking about using The Family Law by Benjamin Law, it's totally different to Romulus in the culture/style/structure/humour/etc, but shares really strong links with Romulus. My teacher said it should be okay, but I'm not sure... Is it a bad idea?

Hi GabbyS! No, I would steer clear of using same text-types and/or genres as the main focus of the ORT concept was to encourage students to branch out and demonstrate a wider reading of texts. I STRONGLY suggest finding a poem, short story (fiction) or short film to compliment 'Romulus, My Father'. PM me your email address for ideas/notes :)

I am pretty sure you aren't allowed the same text type for your supplementary text in AOS but it doesn't matter in Module C, although it is still not recommended.

You are allowed to choose whatever text type you like for ANY module; AOS, Modules A-C. It is not recommended however as it does not demonstrate critical literacy or the ability to deconstruct a variety of text-types or media.

I have a set of 16-page notes for 'Romulus, My Father' that were written by a current Year 12 teacher (who also marked the 2012 HSC exams) as well as a 13-page set of notes for 'Zero', a stop-motion short film (12min) that won a lot of international film festival awards and is an EXCELLENT related text for pretty much ALL of the AOS prescribed texts. PM me for a SAMPLE of either :)
