Private school scholarships Years 7 & 10 - is it just based on scholarship exam mark? (1 Viewer)

Does anyone know how private school academic scholarships for year 7 or 10 entry are awarded?

how much of the weighting is based on the scholarship exam?

What other factors help?

How clever do you have to be to get one (eg top 1 percentile academically or top 0.1percentile?)

How rare is it to see kids that are not heavily tutored get academic scholarships?

i received a scholarship to a private girls' school for y7 entry when i was in y6 (i chose not to go, though). if i recall correctly, most of the weighting is a combination of the scholarship exam and your academic reports (though i believe the exam has a slightly larger weighting?? especially since a lot of people attempting scholarships have good reporrs anyway), and extra curriculars help too. plenty of schools also have an interview to get a good gauge of what this student coming to their school is like, i had one with the principal.

for the scholarship exam, there were comprehension, maths and written expression components, and i think something like general ability that you would see in selective in the exam. i received top 1% for reading and writing, i don't remember the rest

top 1% for reading means you must be extremely clever - was your maths somewhere around the same ballpark level do you think?

back when selective was out of 300, the selective score to expensive private school scholarship was about 250 for boys and 240 ish for girls. and then afterwards it comes down a lot to interviews. also i think maths was less important for private school scholarships than reading/writing.

for kids, environment plays a huge part in determining what their perceived abilities are. pure intelligence is much less of a factor to achieve highly. having said that, it's perhaps not necessary to go tutoring, but there is an absolute need to do papers/targeted practice.

no unfortunately, i think maths was more of a top 10 or 15%, i was decent at maths but i don't think it was a strength like reading and writing was

i was tutored for the selective test rather thaIn focusing on the scholarship exam (i did pre uni selective courses in the leadup to the selective tests, and my dad made me do online tests and books from five senses). but definitely you can get a scholarship without being tutored, especially if you're intelligent, but you'd have to consistently practise in preparation. however i would say it's nowhere near the level of effort needed to get a 99+ atar.

definitely, many selective and scholarship kids (most if not all) are raised in an environment that pushes them to make the most of their education and to aim for things like that. in my opinion, i think very few of these students are purely intelligent anyway

was it changed i thought it was always out of 300 lol

i think it's out of 120 now, it was one of the changes implemented when they changed the entire selective test

now the selective test is based on percentiles (top 10%, top 15%, etc) they said they changed it so other ppl cant compare marks and they don’t even like show u where u r on the percentile which kinda sucks for those doing it
they replaced ga with thinking skills now too
