Hey guys,

How do you find the Angle of launch when you are given the initial velocity and the range?

Eg. The muzzle velocity of a mortar bomb is 100.0m/s. At what elevation should the barrel be pointed to achieve a range of 500.0 m??

[answer 14.97 degrees]

Any help would be greatly appreiciated!

Let the angle of launch be @.

Vertical component: u = +100sin@, v = -100sin@, a = -9.8, .: t = 20.41sin@.

Horizontal component: u = +100cos@, t = 20.41sin@, s = +500.0
.: +500.0 = +100co@ x 20.41sin@
0.49 = 2sin@ cos@ = sin2@
@ =14.97 degrees
