Let a, b be complex numbers that satisfy

i) Prove that for n≥1, by using Mathematical Induction.
- I proved true for n=1 and assumed true for n=k, just need help with Proving true for n=k+1

ii) Show that , if n is not a multiple of 3.

Thanks in advance for help! :D

i. So you proved it true for n=1 in which case you know that and hence so

Likewise for induction hypothesis, if true for n=k then and hence so .

Then for n=k+1 we have

ii.

Case 1, n=3k+1

Case 2, n=3k+2 ( a little trickier)

-------------

Note: Although we can't say because then , not 0.

However we can say or where is a complex cube root of unity.

Then we have as expected or

as expected.
