maybe i am retard, but say i have a quadratic

x^2 - ax - b

when will this not be easily factorized?

obvi it will just be when x isn't a whole number but can you tell from the equation whether or not it'll work or is it just oh no numbers that multiply to give b add to give a guess i'll use the quadratic formula

is there some sort of proof for what will work and what won't work?

I know it won't work if -a<-b because when you think about how that works in the formula, you'll get an unreal solution but is there a proof for when it won't easily factorise when the solutions are not unreal?

i am rambling but whatever yolo hopefully someone gets what i'm saying
