ok so do you med students believe that you have to be a very intelligent kid to understand and get through medicine? and perhaps then through basic surgery training etc? Now sure you can argue that if you achieve a UAI high enough to get into med, then you are obviously smart enough...but i dont find a UAI a good enough indication of whether or not someone can actually handle medicine...like as i understand it...there is LOTS of shit to remember...and it is extremely difficult to understand...to an extent that HSC courses dont even compare to what you have to learn in medicine...

So am i just paranoid and talking from my ass? Or is this in fact true?

well there is a certain way to think .. lik u got to be critical.. or so the syllabus tells me to be :p
u got to be hard working.. cos studying doesnt end the moment u leave uni..

for med the UAI and UMAT means jack if u dun want to keep studying..
med concepts to me are fairly alright..its jsut applying bio concepts that u learnt in 1st yr.. and doing it till ure old.. its lik a sci course ceptu actualli need to remember stuff from the previoius yr.. like when i did my electives there was lil continuity in subjects..

med is applying good science skills so u got to be a practical person and also hav decent reasoning skills.. btw at my uni there are ppl with 91.7 that understand the concepts and r doing better than say ppl with 98.. so u tell me..

btw med and HSC are different ball games.. i think only 4 unit maths compared to with the level of stress and anxiety i get with med.. lolz

i reckon u r more equipped for med if you are good at sticking ur head own and studying than if you are "smart" ie understand concepts quickly. Med is not hard, its just a HELL of a lotta work. The only reason the TER's so high is cos it is so popular.

One point of view is that the HSC tends to reward those people who work hard and work consistently throughout the HSC year and also in general through the preliminary years. Thus it is assumed that, given all other qualities are equal for 2 people with different UAI's, the one with the higher index would be more suited to the hard-working life in medicine. However, there are additional criteria, including UMAT and the interview, and the selection process has (arguably) improved and diversified over the last couple of years in most med schools. I'm still not convinced about the value of the UMAT, however, in selecting out the right people to do medicine.
