Hey guys,

At school we were explicitly told not to use related texts that were set texts for other schools/classes.

I was wondering if this applies to preliminary material as well?

I notice Heart of Darkness as one of the suggested supp. material in Module B in this forum, but since we (as a school) have already done it for our preliminary topic would it be unwise for me to use it? I enjoyed doing it last year and did pretty well with it but if it means less marks (internal or external assesments) just becuz ive done it in prelim then i dont want to use it...

And if this is the case (not using prelim material) how are we supposed to guard ourselves from texts other schools have done that might be regarded as cliched (especially in terms of external marking)?

Sorry just a bit confused there... Thanks for any advice!

No, preliminary material is fine to use as related texts for the HSC. :)

I don't quite understand the second question...do you mean "how to avoid using overused texts?"

There's no real way to "guard" yourself, you just have to make careful choices about what you use. From browsing through this forum and talking to other students it's pretty easy to see which related texts crop up over and over again, or which style of texts are most popular (normally easily accessible texts and/or texts with lots of easily accessible study notes) . If you want to be original, then just steer clear of any 'obvious' or 'easy' choices :)
