well...i do IPT but i think i can try answering you that..

a way that data can be secured on the internet is to use:

firewalls - which can be used on both the internet or a netowrk which requires authentication with all incoming data

data encryption - process where data is all encoded during transmissions etc...

Your question one is a little too broad, important data being secured, in terms of what? via transfering data from one person to another? or uploading data, or having data on a server and having the server be put up on the internet?
