Hey
i was thinking of using Simple Plan's 'Welcome to my life' as a related material for an assignment but the only techniques I can see in it are rhetorical question and repetition. Can anyone see more? or should i use something else?
here are the lyrics:

Do you ever feel like breaking down?
Do you ever feel out of place?
Like somehow you just don't belong
And no one understands you
Do you ever wanna runaway?
Do you lock yourself in your room?
With the radio on turned up so loud
That no one hears you screaming

No you don't know what it's like
When nothing feels all right
You don't know what it's like
To be like me

To be hurt
To feel lost
To be left out in the dark
To be kicked when you're down
To feel like you've been pushed around
To be on the edge of breaking down
And no one's there to save you
No you don't know what it's like
Welcome to my life

Do you wanna be somebody else?
Are you sick of feeling so left out?
Are you desperate to find something more?
Before your life is over
Are you stuck inside a world you hate?
Are you sick of everyone around?
With their big fake smiles and stupid lies
While deep inside you're bleeding

No you don't know what it's like
When nothing feels all right
You don't know what it's like
To be like me

To be hurt
To feel lost
To be left out in the dark
To be kicked when you're down
To feel like you've been pushed around
To be on the edge of breaking down
And no one's there to save you
No you don't know what it's like
Welcome to my life

No one ever lied straight to your face
No one ever stabbed you in the back
You might think I'm happy but I'm not gonna be okay
Everybody always gave you what you wanted
Never had to work it was always there
You don't know what it's like, what it's like

To be hurt
To feel lost
To be left out in the dark
To be kicked when you're down
To feel like you've been pushed around
To be on the edge of breaking down
And no one's there to save you
No you don't know what it's like (what it's like)

To be hurt
To feel lost
To be left out in the dark
To be kicked when you're down
To feel like you've been pushed around
To be on the edge of breaking down
And no one's there to save you
No you don't know what it's like
Welcome to my life
Welcome to my life
Welcome to my life

Okay there should be rules for using songs as related texts:
1. The entire song needs to be analysed. Lyrics are only part of the analysis. You must analyse the musical elements such as pitch, duration, dynamics and expressive techniques (concepts of music basically). Therefore, music students have the upper hand.
2. It needs to be a good song.

If you would like to analyse a song for a Belonging related text I suggest these:
From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea by the Cure
I am a Rock by Simon and Garfunkel
The Fool on the Hill by the Beatles
Manifest Destiny by Jamiroquai
Going to a Town by Rufus Wainwright
Dinner at Eight by Rufus Wainwright
Special Ones by George
Jaded by George

Those are just songs I had on my own list of possible related material purely because they are by some of my favourite artists and I know the songs really well already. However, if you are not a music student or have no intention of analysing the musical elements of a song then I strongly suggest you just steer clear of using one as a related text.

Do not choose that song. Seriously. Don't.
