Hi All :)

I'm in need of a related text for the science fiction genre to accompany prescribed texts Neuromancer and 2001:A Space Odyssey ? (Preferably with points on textual form and traditional perspectives on humanity!)

Thanks :haha:

Here's a pretty good list:
- Bladerunner
- Aliens
- Running Man
- Minority Report
- Metropolis

That's all I could think of right now..

I'd advise not to use Bladerunner as it is on the prescribed list (unless the list has changed)

I'm stuck on this as well!
My prescribed texts are Brave New World, 2001: A Space Odyssey and Dune...

Blade Runner is a prescribed text for Advanced English - Module A Frankenstein & Blade Runner

I used Gattaca and Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind for my trial exam but I am changing as I didn't have enough points for Nausicaa and we did Gattaca in class.

Necroposting in case anyone in later years are interested:

  • I'd recommend checking out Ray Bradbury's corpus of work. Fahrenheit 451, The Martian Chronicles and the Illustrated Man all spring to life (the last 2 are a collection of short stories reworked into novels so you can choose to do the whole novel or just one story).
  • I would also +1 1984, but it's now on the prescribed list in Advanced, so you probably can't do it.
  • 19th century authors such as H.G. Wells and the ilk rate well, as it really lets you delve into the history of the genre.
  • Isaac Asimov!!!
  • If you read Neuromancer and decided that you like cyberpunk, Neal Stephenson's Snow Crash might also be interesting (however I'm not sure about the advisability of doing 2 novels from the same subgenre)
  • The Matrix is quite a good film, but again, it's a bit too similar to Neuromancer

Overall, I'd definitely recommend doing one text that's from the '50s or earlier. Also, the satirical film that's in the new syllabus sounds dodgy and rather malevolent on BOSTES part. Why mock students who do scifi?
