A student designed an experiment to investigate the relative activity of unknown metals, X, Y and Z. She placed each metal into a test tube containing the solution of metal ions indicated in the table and recorded her observations. Her results are shown below.

The relative activity of the metals, X, Y and Z, from the least active to the most active is:

(A) X Y Z
(B) Y X Z
(C) Z Y X
(D) Z X Y

this was a question from my schools 2005 half yearly paper, and i was just confused about something.

the teacher says that the answer is (a) but i thought it was (c) because of the following reasons:
  • X displaces Y from the solution so therefore X's reactivity is greater than Y right?
  • Y displaces Z from the solution so therefore Y's reactivity is greater than Z..
  • therefore X > Y > Z right?
but the question asks for least active to most active, so i would have thought the answer was (C) Z < Y < X

im confused, can anybody help me

Your reasoning is valid, and I agree with you on C. :)
