We're supposed to avoid retell wherever we can in an essay, so how would you go about stating your own interpretation of a text if this is not allowed- does backing it up with analysis sort of negate the retell?

People read and interpret texts differently, if your interpretation is supported by solid textual evidence and presented in a logical, coherent way that answers the question with all its aspects and refers to the module’s intent, then you’re fine. Remember, the objective of an essay is to analyse and discuss certain ideas in relation to a text(s). When you retell the events of your text in the essay, you’re not explicitly discussing any ideas, so of course you need to provide an interpretation (that’s relevant and backed up by evidence).
