Was just wondering if anyone could help me out with the dot point interpretation of the work, particularly genre, and significance of rooster. Also what is the difference between subject matter and meaning - are they both lookin at the intent?

Thanks

There is information on roosters and ochres on the hsc online site which gives u a stack of stuff.... motivation things should be looked at through the bangarra web site where u can get the program notes for ochres and look in google for critical reviews of rooster.... other wise u'll have to grab the video and interpret what u think it is about

In Core Appreciation in the HSC course, students have the opportunity to study specific choreographers and prescribed works from the past 200 years. Students apply the knowledge, skills and understanding gained from analysis, writing and criticism to the in-depth study of on two prescribed artists and two works.

When studying a prescribed choreographer, you need to consider:

background and training
choreographic style
the choreographer's influences on other choreographers, dancers, education and society
the works created
the era or period of his or her work
how the choreographer was influenced by social, political and cultural climate.

It is important to be able to identify the characteristics of the work. The syllabus requires students to recognise the relationship between the various aspects of the work and to be able to critically discuss and write about these aspects.

When studying a seminal work, you should consider:

the history of the work
the context of the work
the contribution of the work
the choreographer's influences, motivation, philosophy
past and present criticism of the work.

I suggest a good looking over NSW HSC ONLINE site, has HEAPS of info.

http://hsc.csu.edu.au/dance/core/appreciation/choreographers/prescribechoreogroverview.html

----------------------

Subject matter:
(this should also give basis for Rooster too)

hint for Ochres: What does the word 'Ochres' mean- figure that out.. that could be relevant to the subject matter

then i suggest some study on teh background and development ideas from the three choreographers- Bernadette Walong, Stephen Page and Djakapurra Manyurran.
Really study those, and find out information about their ideas and interrpretations of the dance.. that could be relavent and fitting into the subject of intent find the stimulous, find the meaning from the choreographers..
study up.

-------
ROOSTER study:

Ok... (hope you don't mind an Ex- HsC dancer giving info :p - i only did the exams last year ^^ )

Rooster:

Study the

- LYRICS - and their interpritation (well the actual movements, and how the words, and verses are incorporated into the dance)

- Study the back ground of the ERA it was choreographed/ first performed (note the time of performance is different to choreographed date)

- Study things such as the

Sexual Revolution
The Femminist Movement
Drugs
Rock n' Roll
Life and politics in the time;

- Christopher Bruces background (although this isn't a major part of it, but you must have basic outline of his life/ career.

- Reviews could be usefull- although i would stick with reviews for Ochres, rather than Rooster.

- Interaction between male and Female Characters on stage

- Costumes

- Types of Movement

- Props.. what props are used, Stage Setting.

- Main characters (describe in relevance to costume and style)

Have a look at this site for ROOSTER

GOod Luck! :D
