Onus on providers to clean up web content

AUSTRALIANS with internet connection could soon have their web content automatically censored.
The restrictions are planned by the Federal Government to give greater protection to children from online pornography and violent websites.
Under the plan, all internet service providers will have to provide a "clean" feed to households and schools, free of pornography and other "inappropriate" material.
Australians who want uncensored access to the web will have to contact their internet service provider and "opt out" of the service.
Online civil libertarians yesterday warned the freedom of the internet was at stake, while internet providers were concerned the new measures could slow the internet in Australia to a crawl.
They said it was a measure usually associated with oppressive regimes and was no alternative to proper parental monitoring.[...]
Welcome to the nanny state. At the very least it should be an opt in scheme.

I am so sick of this 'censor the internet for the children' crap. PARENTS should be responsible for parenting their children, not internet providers. Young children should not be using the internet unsupervised and adults should not have their right to freedom taken away from them because other people can not appropialty supervise their kids.

and even then, i mean, is there really anything that wrong with pornography? i mean, honest to god, it's just SEX. remember, how the children were CREATED IN THE FIRST PLACE.

Now I'll have to tell my parents I want the porn feed, how needlessly embarassing.

hahaha it's only natural that the government wants to get its filthy hands on our stuff, this is what it does. For a long time, the internet was relatively (i stress relatively) burden free of government influence and it actually helped us do shit. Now the government is going to try and screw it up for us. Yay.

I'm extremely annoyed that the government thinks it owns us, and yet civil rights devolution is a completely predictable result of government existence. Of course they're going to just continually take more and more civil freedoms, steal more and more money, this is what they do!

The government is in the pay of porn magazine cartels

Once the internet is censored, Murdoch (the guy with the real power in Aus) will introduce his new flagship publication "The Daily Pornograph" which will sell billions to porn deprived individuals, further increasing his grip over Australia due to it being filled with subliminal right wing propaganda.

You heard it here first.

ah well lucky you, you get to read my blog before they filter it :p

But yeah, on a serious note with this censoring: Does anyone know if they've mentioned anything about exactly what they're filtering, or is the government being deliberately vague about what they consider "inappropriate material"?

It seems to me that once the filtering has been put in, every self-important busybody and victim group will want to impose their views on everyone else.
