Okay call me stupid but I dont quite get scaling. Could you guys name a couple of subjects that are scaled up or down for me. The subjects I'm interested in are:
+ 2 unit math & 3 unit math
+ adv & stnd eng
+ legal studies
+ bio
+ chem
+ modern & ancient history

Does scaling really make that much of a gigantic difference in the end?

I'm not going to try and explain the whole process of raw marks, aligning of marks, scaling etc... so basically:

HSC Marks Alignment Process - Dux College < check that out and browse the other links near the bottom to get a good education about aligning and scaling.

3U Maths, Chemistry scale well comparitively to the other subjects you listed. (Advanced and Standard English are taken as the comparing subject for aligning/scaling... it's very important you go well in English since everyone does it. 1 extra mark can move you up a lot of ranks...)

Scaling makes a very significant difference in the end, but you have to go well in the course. You will see (of you read on that site I provided) that the better scaling subjects tend to be the hardest.... but you have to go well. ^_^

Good Luck.

Subjects that are hard like 3/4unit maths tend to scale higher than easy subjects like hospitality. Also, most sciences>humanities in scaling, just a general rule of thumb.

In the end scaling does matter, for e.g you get an overall mark of 91 in 4unit maths, they scale it up to 95 instead because it's a hard subject. If you get say 88 for General maths, it scales down to 80-82, because it's such an easy subject. (the figures are not accurate)

However if you do really well in a low scaling subject, you could overcome the scaling and get a really good mark at the end.
