if the average mark for a subject is low in my school, would that affect my mark in any way? Say the average is in the 40s and i got a mark in the 70s.

It wouldnt affect your mark, but it serves as a good indicator to how you would do in the HSC. say if you get 80% in your trials, and the average in the trials was 70%, and your school average for this subject is 85%. then that means that you will most likely get about 90-95% in your HSC, based on this.
