hey all!
i want to eventually get into medicine but i highly doubt ill get in undergraduate ...im thinking of doing avanced science, but just incase i dont get into post grad medicine what are career prospects like for advanced science? and how difficult is this course? do yous think its a suitable course to do before trying to get into medicine?

There are so many different subjects and majors in the degree that the prospects are virtually endless. If you can get it down to a few specific areas of interest that would help.

The course varies depending on the subjects you do. It isn't overly difficult, but does require work and effort to achieve a good mark. The advanced subjects offer better scaling and in general is preferable if you have the pre requisite to do them.

It is a very good course in preparation to grad med.

There are about 26 different majors you can do including Anatomy, Biology, Biochemistry, Agriculture, Chemistry, Pharmacology, Physics, Psychology, Microbiology, Physiology...etc

You need to do one major at the advanced level and maintain a credit average in your second and third years.

Problem solving skills are valued just about everywhere, so jobs exist anywhere from scientific research, to analysis, to finance etc.

Depends on what average you're aiming for. If you're going for the bare minimum (ie Cr avg), it's pretty easy.

You don't get much choice in the BMedSc program. Much better off to do BSc (Adv). Also wider career paths.

Yes, if you do a diploma in education, you can become a teacher.

I personally wouldn't go anywhere near BMedSc due to the lack of as many career options as is associated with the BAdvSc degree. If you go into graduate medicine and desire to mostly practise, then either degree will be adequate. However, keep in mind that for BMedSc, your first year subjects are Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Biology with no flexibility with regards to that structure. Also, there are core Medical Science units in 2nd year, and all of this serves to reduce freedom in planning a degree program. For a better degree in itself offering a vast amount of differing career paths, flexibility, BAdvSc is certainly the way to go.

At USyd they don't have a Diploma of Education program. They do, however, have a Masters of Teaching, which is another two years on top of your first degree.

How acheivable is a GPA of 5.5 in this degree, relatively speaking?

GPA of 5.5 is 3 Distinctions and 2 Credits for one semester. Not extremely difficult, at least in first year.

Half distinction and half credit.

However, realise that's the minimum they will consider. Unless you have a very good GAMSAT score, GPA of 5.5 will not get you an interview. Try to aim for above 6, which is all distinction (or credit/HD balancing out).

It's an average based on GPA and GAMSAT, perhaps not 50-50 but I'm not sure. Then they interview roughly 1.5 times the number of places on offer, with these people based on the combined GPA GAMSAT score.

You will not be considered if you have a GPA of under 5.5, even if you get 100% in GAMSAT.

I can't remember if this was for USyd or Melbourne, but they would be similar.

it's true that credit average is bare minimum of what potential med students should have, but plenty with credit averages do get into medicine. Also to get an interview a total score of 59 will land you an interview (this is based on this year). The top mark each year is usually in the 80s.
With proper preparation etc etc most science-background people get 60s or so. Unless you fuck up on the day...what a pity

Either there's a lot of places for grad med at USyd compared to Melbourne, or the people applying for it have generally low marks. Melbourne was like 6.30 and 68.
