You don't. If you think a method may work then you should attempt that method. It does not always have to be substitution.

One does not need to do it by substitution at all. You can put it in wolframalpha and show steps:

So it turns out the differential equation is a bernoulli differential equation. From there you can figure out the substitution required.

i.e. they give you the same euqation. THEN the question goes "by finding a suitable substituion, solve ..."
