hey ya'll!

i'm currently a yr11 student going into y12 text term and I genuinely don't know whether i should go all in for mext2 or not.

For context, i'm doing pretty good in math adv (consistently getting 95%+ in all school assessments) and i'm doing quite alright in ext1 (putting aside my second mext1 exam which i didn't study for and kinda flunked...) where in at times I do even better than in adv/otherwise usually around 90%+. I meet all my schools requirements for taking up mext2 but the issue is I dont know if it would be worth my time/if i'd be able to do that well in it? I enjoy mathematics and have the motivation to do well in it however I just dont know if its worth it.

My general consensus for not taking mext2 kinda looks like this rn:
  1. i'm worried if i pick it up it would take up soosososos much time of my week, as id be forced to get tutoring for both ext1+2 which takes 6 hours/week together (not including transport) + if I were to keep up with all the crazy amount of homework my teacher gives, i'd be spending at least 2 hours a day finishing school hw alone, let alone tutoring hw.
  2. I didn't choose physics for a reason bc i found it too hard and the concepts surrounding mext2 content looks like pure physics/mechanics which I'm scared i will struggle to understand...
  3. The amount of math workload + math periods i'll be having per week. I like math, but i'm not sure if i like it that much to be doing it so often in school.
  4. I heard its really difficult to get good in mext2, hence the scaling
  5. I'm sure i'll definitely be able to achieve really highly doing adv and ext1 alone so i'm worried picking ext2 will leave my adv efforts going towards nothing
  6. I dont need to do mext2 for what i'm looking to get into for uni
And my reasons I would take it include
  1. Taking up an extra unit would technically mean i'm able to drop two of my subjects so that I only have to take 10 units --> more study periods --> less workload I suppose for an extra subject bc math itself as a subject would be 4 whole units?
  2. I HATE PROBABILITY and I suck at it/barely understand it in which I heard you wont have to do if you take up ext2 bc adv content does not get assessed.
  3. Not that this should be a reason, but the scaling IF I were to be able to achieve well in ext2 would really be able to boost my atar ig
  4. + fomo everyone else I know I swear is taking it :(
I know I am always able to try mext2 for a week or whatever but i'm just scared thats not going to allow me to actually feel if i should end up taking it or not bc I do have the drive to work hard in maths and I dont think learning one week of introductory content is going to make me decide whether i hate the content or not. If you took mext2, could you please give insight on what the content is like and how it pares up to mext1/how you manage your time getting all hw done etc? Any advice would be greatly appreciated .

thanks!

You only need a 50% raw mark in the extension 2 hsc exam for it to be equivalent to a mid band 6 in math advanced.

Hence, your 95 in advanced is irrelevant.

Just do 4u

yes yes yes do x2 yes its good

1. have you considered not doing tutoring? based on your cool marks in adv and ext 1 maybe you don't need it? i personally find x2 to generally not have that high of a workload (although i never do the homework... uhh but still! the textbook is only 6 chapters, much less than for adv)
2. mechanics is only one topic in x2 and is considered the easiest topic (since its basically just number crunching). If you've done motion and rates from adv it's similar and i'd say don't worry too much about it, the hardest parts of x2 are not physics related.
3. try it!! if your grades in adv and x1 are rlly good (i'm assuming you probably only get tripped up by silly mistakes and really weird questions) then x2 shouldn't be too difficult.
4. x2 will almost always lead to a higher atar contribution than adv
5. you can always drop! (hopefully)

also no probability yay!!

how does this guy find hsc physics hard? good luck on mechanics, 40% of the paper.
