When introducing a title of a text should you use single or double quotations?

ie 'The Tempest' by Shakespeare
or "The Tempest" by Shakespeare

I've always use single but I've encountered a classmate who uses double. Which one is correct?

(I thought that double marks were only for quotes not the actual title)

Single. Underlining is optional, but always use single quotation marks.

You are correct, you should use single quotation marks for text title ('The Tempest'). When it comes to quotes, you can use either single or double quotation marks as long as it you keep it consistent throughout your essay ('QUOTE' or "QUOTE")
