sketching gradient functions (1 Viewer)

heys ..

im getting really confused with the questions where they either give you the sketch of the f'(x) and tell you to sketch the primitive or they give you the skect of f(x) and tell you to sketch the gradient function..

can anyone give me any pointers?

when you are given f(x) and told to draw f'(x) things to look for:

- turning points will become x-intercepts,
- inflexions will become turning points
- sloping upwards becomes somewhere above the x-axis
- sloping downwards becomes somewhere below the x-axis
- vertical sections become vertical assymptotes.

when you are given the opposite you just reverse this advicve (x-intercepts become turning points etc), but keep in mind that the whole graph can rise or fall vertically when finding anti-derivatives (due to the constant of integration), sometimes they will give you 1 point that satisfies f(x) so that you know where it should be positioned, othertimes it won't matter.
