Someone give me a quick break down in how to do translations. i get confused by all the formulas when b>a etc, etc.

The values of 'a' and 'b' determines the 'fatness' and 'skinniness' of hyperbola

A formula: $a^2 e^2 = a^2 + b^2$

Horizontal hyperbola
$\frac{x^2}{a^2} - \frac{y^2}{b^2} = 1$

$a^2 e^2 = a^2 + b^2$

Vertical hyperbola
$\frac{y^2}{a^2}-\frac{x^2}{b^2} = 1$

$a^2 e^2 = a^2 + b^2$

Something to help you remember is: 'a is always the 1st number'

eg. $\frac{y^2}{4} - \frac{x^2}{81}=1$

$a^2 e^2 = a^2 + b^2 \rightarrow 4e^2 = 4 + 81$

Also, what about ellipses/hyperbolas that are slanted. Are do they not come up in 4u?

yeh i dont think they come up in 4U
