oh i hate this aswell!
But i know its got somthing to do with 'doping'. You take an element from coloum 4, and dope it with coloum 5.
Also, with semiconductors, silcon is used over the other one (cant remember name) because it is more abundant (it can be extracted more easily, and hence, more cheaply) and silicon creates an oxide insulator (??) when it is heated up. I guess this is why we have em in our computers (so it doesnt cook up)
