Hey everyone,

I understand the simple question like:

Fe|Fe^2+||Cu^2+|Cu
E(cell)= 0.79 volts

but what about questions like:

Ag|Ag^2+||Br, Br2|Pt (its polyatomic bromine, Br-Br :spin:)

Pt - platnium can conduct electricity and is inert and will not participate in any reaction

If you have an inert electrode, its the same as normal ones

Search for the half equation for Ag and Br

Ag+ + electrion --> Ag (s) 0.80V

0.5 Br2 (l) + electron --> Br- 1.08V
0.5 Br2 (aq) + electron --> Br- 1.10V

We obviously know that silver will undergo oxidation and release electrons

Now which bromide equation do we choose? It all depends on the question, look at the states of Br(...) in the given galvanic cell notation thing

When you write your galvanic cell in that format, what part correlates to which one? I forgot.

the more reactive metal is the anion and the other metal is the cation. The double || in the middle is separating the two half-cells.

The way you write it should correspond to what is happening

It should be written as Fe3+, Fe2+ if iron is going to be reduced.
