Hi guys I have been wondering whether or not I should stay in adv math or drop down to standard. Last year I wasn't in the best place mentally and feel like I didn't perform my best, or do as well as I could have done. I failed my first maths exam by 2 marks, even though I somewhat tried. I'm not worried about scaling or getting a band 6, I just want to try my best and know I did the best I could have done. I also do eco, business, legal, bio, eng standard so I don't have the strongest subjects scaling wise but idrc. I'm not sure if I'm going to drop down, but will my atar drastically be impacted because I failed my first assessment? If I want to stay, how do I study? Because I try using past paper questions but don't know the content, so I go to the textbook but I know those questions are different from the exam paper. I don't know what textbook to use, whether or not I should start small or just save myself the stress and drop down. I know I may not get a band 6 at this stage and may have limited my chances because I also haven't been locking in for my other subjects. Thanks for any help! Have a good day

I mean I’m kinda in this similar position and I’ve decided to drop cause it was too much of a struggle and it would take too much time to catchup and to do well. If u aren’t willing to put a ton of effort into the subject then maybe drop especially if u think u have a better chance of band 6ing std and u wanna focus on ur other subjects too. part of me was always like if I just locked in harder maybe I would have done better but realistically I realised that I wouldn’t have the time and motivation to do that and I would be better of in std

also ur atar won’t be affected as long as u work really hard and u think u can improve ur ranks from now till trials

also ur subjects are very content heavy so thats smth to keep in mind.

id recommend to stay. failing your first assessment doesn't mean anything!
if you want to improve then you 100% can. dont let your performance currently define what you can do from now on
if you ever need help you can always ask on bos!!
i'd recommend the maths in focus textbook to get your foundations right, and hopefully then the questions in exams will start to seem less foreign.

Yeah that's true, I need to focus on my other subjects cuz they are content heavy and I've sort of been winging them or procrastinating on everything... Also if I drop down, I would also need to learn all the content and do the standard exam right?

yeah u would. But it doesn't take that long and I've already covered like chapters in the past few days. But I don't think you'll have to do the std task 1 exam. It depends if u think u can actually improve drastically. Cause I feel like for me the time to results ratio wasn't very proportional

I had two average students at similar level at Year 10 in a public school. They both wanted to do science related study at uni. One of them decided to do Adv math , the other chose Standard. At the end Advanced one was around mid range in his ranking . Standard one topped his school with 98/100 average.
Which one did the right decision ?
In my view , both selections have equal merit. But you need to know the advantages and disadvantages.
Advanced selection : If you will have a math class at your uni study, early exposure to Advanced topics is a benefit. On the other hand you will compete against Extension 1 students who are in absolute advantage. So it is quite difficult to get a good ranking.
Standard selection : You can get a good mark with less study. On the other hand it scales badly. So you need to be among the top 5 per cent. Also you may need to study on your own later to learn about Advanced topics if you will have math class at uni.

standard math scales like garbage not because it's so easy, rather it's full of retarded literal drop kicks. ~50% of the actual standard 2 HSC paper is identical to the advanced paper.

Thus Advanced is only slightly more difficult than standard 2.

In all honestly it just depends on what degree you intend to do in university.

But in my opinion regardless it's better to keep it. Really the key to getting better at anything is just consistency. For year 11 term 2 last year I failed chemistry, physics and advanced. After that I just committed to learning all the content on the holidays and grinding as many of the chapters I could to mitigate HW during the school term and after that I had the time to do around 30 minutes of practice questions each day for all my subjects. So really the maximum I would study per day after around week 3 was around 2.5 - 3 hours. So now on the holidays just dedicate half the day to making notes on everything and doing the exercises whilst you have time. I have a calendar on my desk where I explicitly planned what do each day for each of my subjects and it helps a lot. For the holidays all I have been doing is 1 chapter per day for Cambridge and I'm scheduled to finish slightly after the first week of February and it's just practice from there.

Hope you find some part of this even slightly useful 😂 I say this because I was in your shoes last year considering to drop
omg I failed year 11 term too as well. But yeah I'm not that dedicated and I'd rather choose the easy option and be guaranteed to do really well as long as I put some effort in
