You know I think I was better at maths before I started the general course. It's lack of mathematical heart made it feel like for me that I haven't even been doing maths for the last year (I changed from advanced to general at the start of yr12).
Absolutely fundamental principles of maths such as algebra we just didn't use for the whole year. I just don't think teachers are realising that algebra should be reinforced more, they think it's something everyone instantly knows as if we all speak it at home like a first language the way they probably do with their loved ones (gross!).
When we come across some question in class and it gets to the point where the teacher would run through it on the board, hands would be going up asking "wtf did that become a negative" "huh where did that come from". And 99% of the time it would be because you'd be balancing the equation or something else fundamentally simple.
[edit] heh, I'm pretty good else where in maths except algebra. It's actually quite embarassing when simplifying an algebraic fraction or something, and can't find help in my yr11 or yr12 books because its just too fundamental to be in the 'fundamental principles' section. So then have to consult elementary level books.
I take responsibility for this, in yr7-yr9 I dont think I did any maths work what so ever. Maths isn't something you just wing off like other subjects, requires actual practise. Same with a language, did absolutely terrible at French in yr8 as of 0 effort and am doing brilliantly at German now as I practice all the time.
