So, I was planning on going to China for student exchange and I'm currently in Year 11. I might have to go for the entire two years, because of family reasons, so I wanted to ask about my HSC, since I would've have missed all the education, does that mean I won't be able to sit for it? Also, if i go for the duration of the rest of year 11, when I come back would I have to just catch up on everything I missed during my stay away?
And also, another question I wanted to ask other people's opinions on is, if you were to go on exchange for 4 weeks, would you go during the July-August holidays and miss out on 2 weeks of year 11 OR during the September-October holidays and miss out on 1-2 weeks of the start of year 12?(since year 11 only has three terms and year 12 starts on the last term of the year blahblahblah i guess you's all know :) )

Firstly, if you miss year 11 and year 12 you will not be eligible to sit the HSC exams in October. However, if you miss just year 11 then you will still have to come back and repeat year 11...i think, perhaps if you speak to your school about it beforehand and take work with you, you might be able to come back and not have to repeat, however it is very unlikely. I know people who did exchange for year 10 and still had to repeat.
In regards to your other question, if you have the choice between the two then definitely miss out on year 11 as it is nowhere near as important as year 12.
Hope that helps!
