I've looked into it for law. Basically, you need to have approval from both mac and the uni you want to go to. Email the administrator or student advisor of the faculty of the unit you want to effectively 'swap' and ask for the coordinator of uni-to-uni transfers (cant remember the official name). Its pretty simple, but there can be some GPA requirements, and not all credit points are equal, so you might come back with 1credit left to use at Mac (which is a pain). Off the top of my head the only uni around here that has the direct equiv in credit points is USYD.

It's called Cross-Institutional Studies. Concurrent Studies is doing two degrees at once.

And with the point thing, I thought they just made the unit equal to the cps of a unit had it been at Macquarie; eg, a 3000 level ancient history unit at USyd is 6cps, but is worth 4 MQ cps (equal to an AHST3xx level unit) on a transcript. I *think* that's how it works.

All the rest about the approval seems right, though.

Isn't cross-institutional studies what the OP was asking about? Not a concurrent degree? I explained the process for cross-institutional (ie. taking another unit at a different degree).

Anyway! :D

With law (and it might just be some funky law thing), USYD had 400-level and 500-level law units which equated to 8cp. Mac accepted that as a 4cp unit, so a complete elective. However, at places like UTS their 400 and 500-level law units are only worth 6cp, which Mac only accepts as a 3cp unit, so you are left with a random extra 1cp.

And, you dont get marks for the units you study elsewhere: you only get a "satisfactory" or "unsatisfactory" mark on your transcript. And it doesnt count towards your GPA.

i remember when i was initially going to Sydney University and had to go in for half a day to sort out my units (this happened to be on the same day that i was also going to big day out 04 mind you :p), the credit point system was just double that of maq.

For example, all the first year units were 6cp, whereas the later units (i.e. 200 level) where worth 8cp. They do 24cp per semester instead of 12cp.

I'm guessing this just parallels the system of maq having lots of 3cp units in first year and 4cp units in later years?

Oh sorry, I'm an idiot! I read this:
(cant remember the official name)
incorrectly! *needs new glasses*

But at least I read the thread title correctly. Do I get a gold star

I didn't have to speak with anyone at SES - one of the Ancient History academics wrote a cover letter to Dr Weeks at USyd, he wrote back, then this was attached to a massive form + my transcript. Handed into SES and voila! I can imagine it being a hassle if you haven't befriended someone in your division.

We all know that you can't sucessfully graduate without filling out at least five-hundred pages of forms. Best to start early, I say. =)

Edit: Oops, sorry. The academic was the Dean of Humanities at the time. It needs to be signed by the Dean of your Division or at SES, like you said. (Pays to have photocopies of everything...) I'd still prefer to brave walking into a Dean's office than trying to communicate with those extraterrestrials at SES.
