On behalf of my friend, I would like to ask you, my fellow BoSers a question in regards to the subject selection in Year 12.

My friend who currently carries 12 Units is planning to drop a subject in Year 12 was apparently told that he cannot drop a certain subject. Does school have power to do so? As far as I know, they cannot do that unless it's an English course.

The subject he wishes to drop is a non-English course and he is angry that he cannot drop his subject. Anyone with accurate info, pleast post here. Thanks.

It's maths. He abominates the idea of continuing the course through yr 12.

But Namu the thing is, some subjects are part of a school's culture, and if you don't want to do them, then you're free to find yourself another school. Is the school a public or private school?

Are you serious? But maths is obviously not my school's culture. My school is a private school by the way.

It would be unfair, wouldn't it be? And I don't really remember knowing that maths was a compulsory subject at my school. It's only English and SOR I that are compulsory.

Well, the fact that your school is a private school puts a whole new spin on the story. Private schools are pretty much allowed to do as they please, and if their students don't like, there's always other school they can go to.

Also, many schools do as you have described.

And you can't really call the DET up and complain, either.

If you attended a public school, then yes, he would be allowed to drop it, and if the teachers said no, then he could take it to the DET.
However, you said that you're at a private school, which changeas things. I've always been in public education, so I'm not 100% on this, but I have friends at private schools, and parents in the education system. As far as I know, a private school is allowed to make any subjects it chooses compulsory, and as Wassup? said, if students don't like it they can choose another school.

Surely the school can not force him to do a subject he obviously does not want to continue with. As far as I am aware a school can attempt to pursuade him to keep that subject and suggest that he drops another but I have not heard of a similar situation before when the school is forcing someone to keep a subject.

Actually schools can enforce this as a rule for when you sign up to do HSC you agree to the school thinking in your best wishes. Then can drop the subject if they pleade their cae or do absolutely crap in it then they can say that their an exceptional circumstance.

If its a private school they can. If its a selective school they can ie. some schools pressurise the students to do MX1 in Year 11 even if they don't want to. And they have to keep it in Year 12 or are "expected" to.

Force the school to show a record of their policy where the reasoning behind this matter is clearly set out. If they fail to produce evidence of their policy, show them Board of Studies syllabus etc. and they'll be forced to let your friend drop.

Teachers cannot make you drop a subject, only recommend you to drop it and make you feel bad for not dropping it.
