Hi all, I'm currently selecting subjects for study in year 11 and would like to hear your opinions on my choices
I would like to study psychology or possibly marketing in the future and was wondering if these subjects would be helpful to me.

- ext 1 maths (might possibly take ext 2 in year 12)
- advanced English (might consider taking extension 1 though)
- economics
- chemistry
- society & culture

I also have a few questions:
1. If I take advanced eng in yr 11, is it possible to pick up ext 1 in yr 12?
2. Out of all these subjects, which ones have a major work involved?
3. If for example I was to drop society and culture in yr 12, am I dropping 1 unit or 2 units?
4. Would it be better to do business studies instead of society & culture? (which one scales better?)

Do you think these are a good combination of subjects?

Thanks in advance for any replies :)

1. You have to pick it in Yr11
2. Society & Culture
3. 2 units
4. Choose the one that you enjoy and as for scaling i think they are about the same

1. No. You need to do the preliminary Year 11 Ext 1 Eng course to do the Year 12 Ext 1 Eng course.
2. Society & Culture has the PIP.
3. 2 units for SAC. 1 unit subjects are things like doing Ext 1 maths (without doing Ext 2) or Extension 1 English or Studies of Religion I.
4. There is no such thing as a 'good combination' because everyone has different strengths and interests. Whilst Ext 1 and 2 Maths scales EXTREMELY well, Advanced aligns better than Standard English, Economics and Chemistry scale better than many other 2U subjects like Business Studies, Legal Studies, Engineering Studies, etc., a 'good combination' really depends on the person.

A 'good combination' for someone who excels in Writing/Social Sciences compared to Maths/Science would be like:
Ext 2 Eng (4U, 3U and Adv)
[insert possible units of Mathematics]
Business Studies
Economics
Legal Studies

rather than:
[insert mandatory 2 units of English]
Ext 2 Mathematics
Physics
Chemistry
Biology.

Whilst the 2nd combination may have higher scaling subjects overall, a 'humanities' specialist would probably maximise their ATAR if they choose a combination like the first option which suits their strengths and interests.
