Planning on doing the following subjects next year:

English Advanced
Maths 2U
Maths Extension 1
Physics
Chemistry
Earth and Environmental
Geography (Possible but not certain)

Are there any tips and advice or perhaps things should be aware of for the above?

And, this is probably a silly question but is it better to do 11 units than 13? And how would an odd number affect the outcomes?

If you enjoy all your subjects then it doesn't really matter if you have 11 or 13 units except if you find that studying for all those subjects take too much time..


13 units technically gives you more wiggle room, e.g can stuff up more subjects without it have a massive detriment to your ATAR.

You must complete a minimum of 12 units during preliminary studies, including at least 2 units of English.

If you do 11 or 13 units in year 12, the main draw back is that the extra 2 units will just take up extra time from you that may be focused on your other subjects. However you should be thinking about that towards the end of your prelim study.

Odd numbers just affect your ATAR such that your best 10 units are included. So if necessary, there may be a case that in the calculation of your ATAR only 1 unit of a 2 unit subject may count towards your ATAR.

In prelim geography, you have to complete a geography project about something you want to research. It's a *little* time consuming, but it's fun too. So yeah. Beware of that. But hsc geography has no project- yay!
There is overlap between earth and environmental science and geography, mainly with the ecological dimension of geography, which helps one understand I guess. Geography also investigates the human impact on the environment, so I don't know if that will help with your future career.
