I'm just wondering if anyone could give me any info on Primary teaching at UWS. I know that you have to do a BOArts for three years and you only do teaching in your 4th year- but how exactly does that work? Do they just squeeze everything into the fourth year? And, what exactly is a BOArts? I know you get to pick what you want to major in, etc, but, how do I know I am picking the right subjucts that might help in in teaching? And how exactly do I choose these subjects? I am really confused!!! Please help!!!

ok. you hjace to go to um www.teach.nsw.com.au or something like that I dunno the exact addy.. but somewhere on there will be a list of all the types of units that you have to study.

Pretty much at UWS, you do the arts degree following what kind of units you have to do to meet the requirements to teach in primary schools then they put all the teaching units into one year or you can do it over a year and a half.

if it's a bach of teaching;/bach of arts like they have at other uni's it's pretty much the same.. except you start doing teaching units in your first year.
Eg: next year two of my units will be education units and the rest will be the units for subjects i wish to teach

only_me - that's the kinda stuff that D-Day is REALLY useful for so i'd urge you to go:)

that way you can talk face to face to staff and students and find out all that kinda stuff and you get more or those booklets bout the course and all that that provide you with suggested course sequences ie the order they suggest you do units in if you want to do certain things and all that kinda stuff - its reallyhelpful:)

Teaching

Hey - just though I would let you know if you want to become a primary teacher you first do a Bachelor of Arts and then a one year Bachelor of Teaching (Primary) - information about this can be found here: http://www.uws.edu.au/studyoptions/australian/undergraduate/courselist/teachingpathways

Doing it this way allows more career flexibility, and is just as recignised as a 4 year teaching degree. Info about the 1 year degree can be found here: http://handbook.uws.edu.au/hbook/course.asp?course=1510.1

Good luck, hope this helped :)

Would you be more prepared for teaching doing a proper four year course somewhere else?
not necessarily... plus - it depends on what kind of teaching you want to do, what areas you want to specialise in etc...

its just like any course - if you do the work and keep up to date on employment methods/opportunities/types you'll be prepared..

teaching is one of the very few areas you are basically guaranteed a job regardless.... as long as you aren't too picky about where you want to teach, you are very highly likely to get a job 1st year out with a decent income - its not like stuff like... say... business or psych or science etc courses where employment's really i guess.... hard to predict/prepare for... since there are state wide standards and always will be vacancies around
