So anyway, we got our first assessment back, and aprt from the Top Ranked class, performance across the board wasn't too great. Mine wasn't either.

I'm just having trouble finding out WHAT THE F*** they want. So many people I know worked as hard as I did(to the detriment of other subjects), revised work, rewrote, redid whole esssays, creatives. And received <80%.

Seriously, does anyone have any ideas on what this stupid subjective subject is looking for? Tips? Any similar experiences from your schools?

You see, this is the problem with school today (and Universities): original thought and ideas are not encouraged. They expect everyone to fit into a certain box in terms of thought and style (mostly a certain political and sociological leaning, but I won't get into that).

It should be that they are looking for your best and something that really makes sense and fits with the theme.

Sorry, that's no help, but I needed to rant.
