As per the title, I’m confused on whether to drop ext 1 math or not. I’m in yr 11 and my marks are pretty bad (26% for ExT1 rank 113/123 and 35% for T2 rank 114/123) and I feel quite disheartened since I like the subject and I understand most topics fairly well but my marks are making me start to lose interest. I believe it is also negatively affecting my adv marks as well (50% in T1 and 72% in T2), since I feel like I’m not able to get a good grasp of the adv topics due to having to study the ext topics as well. I was doing pretty well in maths last year (averaging 75-80%) so idk what to do. I’m also thinking of picking up ext history, so then I don’t think ext math will even count since I’ll have 12 units (11 if I drop ext math). For reference I also do eng adv, visual arts, mod history, bio and photog as a 1u (in yr 11 that’ll be dropped for yr 12). I’ve spent quite a lot of time at tuition and at home studying for ext too and I don’t like the thought of having to lose all that effort, but I feel like I’ll have to now based off how my performance is. It feels like no matter how much effort I put in, it doesn’t pay off during exams.

Sorry for the yap but any advice or suggestions is greatly appreciated 🙏

I was in the same boat as you last year. I was studying so hard for ext 1 just to get mediocre marks. I found clarity though when year 12 started. The topics began to fuse together in a more cohesive manner, and I found it more enjoyable, so much that now I'm projected by my school to get a high E4. Mind you, I got 30% on my first assessment in prelim. What I can tell you is that if you keep on persisting, you will reap the benefits of the course. If not for anything, at least see how you go on your first assessment. As you said, this will be your 11th unit, so even if you aren't happy with your mark, you can be proud of the effort you put into it, without worrying about it affecting your ATAR. As for maths advanced, just keep on being consistent and just try your best. I found that year 12 advanced, whilst more conceptually difficult, has been less stressful as you have become accustomed to the standards expected of the course. I hope the forthcoming year goes well for you and just remember, your results do not diminish your hard work, keep on going! You've got this diva!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
