JERUSALEM - In Israel's ultra-Orthodox Jewish community, where the rule of law sometimes takes a back seat to the rule of God, zealots are on a campaign to stamp out behavior they consider unchaste. They hurl stones at women for such "sins" as wearing a red blouse, and attack stores selling devices that can access the Internet. In recent weeks, self-styled "modesty patrols" have been accused of breaking into the apartment of a Jerusalem woman and beating her for allegedly consorting with men. They have torched a store that sells MP4 players, fearing devout Jews would use them to download pornography.
"These breaches of purity and modesty endanger our community," said 38-year-old Elchanan Blau, defending the bearded, black-robed zealots. "If it takes fire to get them to stop, then so be it."

And some Christians in America blow up abortion clinics - acts which the majority of Americans are disgusted by.

So what tenuous point are you trying to draw this time, hmm?

The difference, you see, is that criminal acts like this are exactly that - criminal - in Israel and America. Whereas in the rest of the Middle East they are usually legal punishment either de jure or de facto.

Blowing up abortion clinics is a justified action for many, so long as noone is physically hurt. I can accept people disagreeing about abortion but I cannot accept automated responses to the tune of: abortion good christians bad lol!

So indeed, Trefoil, the two situations are entirely different.

Damn Jews. Kill 'em all and let their "God" sort them out.

How is this worthy of being called "news"?
Jews are good people, and this has NOTHING to do with the "state" of Israel. There are nutjobs everywhere. Personally, I believe the "state" of Israel has done things much worse than burning a shop which sells MP4's. Including: Bombing houses where women and children are hiding.

If you don't mind me asking Sam, why do you put the word 'state' in inverted commas?

Thread title suggests the state of Israel has adopted domestic policies like those of Saudi Arabia, and that is misleading.

Israel still fails though.

Oh, I thought you were denying that Israel was in fact a state, which is fair enough.

And I agree. If one nutjob that belongs to a certain group does something that we perceive as negative, it doesn't mean the entire group is alike.

One rotten apple shouldn't ruin the entire barrel.

In this thread, you're all insane.

I really don't get this dogged hatred of Israel from the Arab members of the forum. We're all in Australia, why do you all insist on flogging the corpse of a horse?

Fucking hell, weirdos.

Yeh theres a bunch of religious nutjobs in Israel but as Trefoil pointed out, you can get them anywhere.

The article referred to what happened in Jerusalem. Jerusalem is a religious city. Tel Aviv on the other hand is secular. Even in Jerusalem you dont have to abide by strict "moral" codes enforced by the state, like those in Saudi Arabia and other countries. However, as we read in the article, individual religious Jews illegally enforce their own moral standards on others.

jews are whiney and they are hypocritical, the most prominent terrorists in the world! they claim that they have been persecuted, but in fact the holocaust was not a factual situation at all, but a medium through which to attain the state of palestine for their own! because jews are generally greedy in nature, this turn of events does not come as a surprise, but the fact of the matter is that the jewish zionist greed for land and power has come at the price of the palestinian people and the whole religion of islam which has now been dealt a label which is false in its entirity for being one of violence and hate! how can you not hate a 'state' that has been whinging since time began about their precious promised land for the children of abraham? apart from this claim being totally irrelevant to any entitlement to land, arabs are in fact also 'children of abraham'. the fact that the USA justifies this terrorism against palestine is indicative of their bias towards israel, so its david vs. goliath in the world once again, and you know how that story goes. the classification of freedom fighting organisations such as HAMAS and Hezbollah in our western society as 'terrorist organisations' is also a key indicator of the western world's collaboration with israel in bringing oppression and death to the middle east. sigh.

maybe thats why he hates jews?
and i hope ahmadinejad does something about the situation.

This is not state-sanctioned unlike Saudi Arabia.

The ultra-orthodox are scary, and a walk down Mea She'rim the Ultra-Orthodox suburb in Yerushalayim is equally scary.

The Haredim are not popular in Israel nor will ever form the front of any Israeli Government.

I generally support Israel but they give too many concessions to the Haredim. The lives of secular Jews should not be dictated by parties such as Shas and the like. Why should they be exempt from IDF service? They are the ones who use the religious reasoning for Israel's existence. Also, other Jews and Arabs in Israel have to get their head out of the bible and get a job, so should they.

I'm an Israel Jew and I think your thread unfairly paints Jews in a certain light to appeal to emotion.

It's the religious freedom in Israel that allows the Haredim their right to practise religion, I see it as both a positive and negative, though can't stand it when they criticise the IDF especially considering the IDF's fervent protection to settlements populated primarily with Haredi men, women and children. These ultra-conservative, religious rightists should experience a life without the protection of the IDF. Let's see how long they'd last then!

Oh, one other thing - Israel is a Jewish State. What's worse? Haredim who don't contribute in so many aspects of Israeli society, though pro-create more than any other group of people in Israel or a Jewish State with an increasingly dangerous population of Arabs who will effectively destroy the Jewishness of the State?

Please don't missunderstand me. I am all for the Arab-Israelis who are actively involved and contribute to Israel society, especially the Druze though the demographics of Israel raise concern for it's continued survival AS a Jewish State.

^Your post assumes that the Jewish state has any right to exist.

Well evidently destroying a violent, illegitimate state isn't a bad thing. So I'll take the first one, Eddie.
