Hey all,

I know a couple of people have questions - or will have questions - about how to get to Mq, whether to bother buying an yearly parking pass, etc etc. Let's have them all here so it's easy to for the first-years to find :)

My four tips are:

A) If you're planning on driving to MQ more than once a week, I suggest that you get yourself the yearly parking pass thingo. It'll cost around $130, but it's totally worth it - I'll let someone else do the math. It doesn't just work out economically, but reduces the need for you to park your car, run to the little permit meter thing, then run back to your car to stick the bit of paper under the winder, then run for your class - which would totally suck if you are already running late.

B) Yes, you do actually have to do this whole cumbersome running thing if you don't have a parking pass. We have security people that walk around every day checking that people have paid for their parking and are parked legally - if you park on "do not park here" areas, you WILL be fined.

C) If you're planning on parking at MQ, try to avoid the 10am-2pm (peak hour) times even if it means arranging to get to Uni early. Most people have lectures/tutes during these hours so not a lot of people will leave uni... and there is nothing worse than driving round and round the carpark trying to find a place to park when there isn't any! (which means you'll probably have to park at Macquarie Centre and walk to your class from there... and then walk back later!) This double sucks if you only arrived at Uni just in time for your class.

D) And finally... if you HAVE to drive in at the yucky 10am-2pm timeslot, do yourself a favour and try to arrive at 5 or 10 to. Why? Because lectures finish at 5 to the hour. It normally takes them five to fifteen minutes to walk to their cars - and you get about ten minutes to grab the empty lots while they're there (what am I saying... they're not empty! You have to "tail" your targets, moving really slowly... lol). After that, they will basically be all gone and you may have to wait another hour for the next lectures/tutes to finish and for people to vacate their parking spaces.

Enjoy!

i have survived more than 2 semesters and summer school without parking sticker. that was because i was only coming to uni 1-3 days a week. i'd park in my special area and its then about a 5-10 minute walk to library, coming from behind the lake. saved myself some money and got some exercise. if i would be going to uni 4 days a week at good parking times, then i would consider buying it.

thats my opinion. :)

for bus travel, esp regarding westbus. get you concession card straight away. halves your travel costs. fill out a form from ses and either give it to the bus driver or at the depot, which i think is in glendenning (i think!). if you give it to the bus driver it takes a few days, so it might even be worth going to uni now to try to organise something for when it starts. it applied to me, catching the 611.

for train travel, get the concession sticker (blue) to go on your student card. as far as i am aware, you get that from ses too. you can use this for your normal travel to zig zag, etc. a MUST.

a constructive post in a while. now, i shall leave to celebrate the moment. ;)

for parking, ALWAYS shout out to the person you're tailing to see if they are actually going, that way theres no misunderstandings! Yes, people do ignore you, make you wait five minutes, fiddle around in there car, then walk away from the car and back to uni etc.
OH, and sometimes ppl lie when they say they are going, sometimes they like to just sit in their cars :?

Or you could get there early enough to get a spot! :p

I've learnt the hard way, and have so constructed my timetable so I'm either there 9am, or in the evening, so I'm always guaranteed a spot.

If you go in after 11am, you're pretty much screwed.

Sometimes people have a break between lectures, and need some place to go without leaving campus. Especially if its raining and the library is full. Or they need to sleep like Glitterfairy! :p

Or you could be like me, and construct a timetable with 1pm and 4pm starts :p

Haha yes, sleeping in the car is so much better than the benches in the W6A/B courtyard. *hugs camry wagon*

*whistles innocently*

If you see a girl sleeping in the front seat of a green CRV, don't tap the window... let the poor girl (ie me) sleep! lol

Ah, how I love my in-between tute naps. Ces't tres bonne. Why sleep on the ground at the mercy of wind, sun and changing temperatures, when you can sleep in your comfy car?

On a random note I'm kinda suprised no BOSmember has caught me sleeping in my car yet. I did it SO OFTEN last semester... if you do catch me, leave me a note under my windscreen wiper or something to tell me you wanted to say hi! hahaha

You know, when I finally noticed your pirate note (I was driving at the time) I freaked out and thought it was a frickin' parking fine or something. This required me to panic and pull over before I realised it was from you :p

Yup! You should be able to get travel concessions in the SAM atrium I think - where they take your photos and you get your diary etc.

Yep, in the Atrium as Glitter said. My boy is giving them out :D

Did you guys know we're not supposed to get a concession sticker if we are employed? Not that anyone really cares, but some guy realised yesterday, and so he decided not to get one! I feel sorry for those who are so honest :(

Ever bought a ticket from there? If you have it should be written on there. If not, you can always call the transport info line.
