Regarding his experiment leading to importance of sex-linkage, I need a little clarification because various textbooks are contradicting each other.

So far my knowledge is:
1. He studied fruit flies and he noticed one male was white eyed.
2. he bred it with a homozygous female red.
3. F1 generation shows that all are red.

and then i dont understand what he did afterwards. i know he did mendelian crossing using f1 offspring, but one of my textbook says the F2 doesnt show mendelian ratios while the other textbook says it does but all the whites are males. and then something about test crossing and reciprocal crossing and i dont understand how he ended up concluding that the eye colour is 'sex-limited' and from which test crossing he concluded it from.

Can someone please help me clarify this dot point?

Thanks in advance.
