I have a copy of the Time Riley 2010 Economics WORKBOOK... I am planning to buy the 2012 textbook, but do you think it is a waste of money buying the 2012 workbook?

Are the 2010 and 2012 workbooks the same?

Thanks

Eco is one of the only subjects, where keeping up with textbooks can be a good idea because of the recent statistics, data, trends etc..
That being said, 2012 economics is already outdated by the time it comes out because it is normally written about a year earlier, then printed distributed etc....

So its up to u, if u can be bothered its better to work out the trends for yourself by extra reading (gittins articles, economist.com) that way it sticks to your head better

I think most of the textbook will be the same as previous years; the main difference would just be a few sentence additions to reflect current economic trends. It is up to you whether you are willing to spend on a textbook or if you would prefer to do independent research using newspaper articles & other sources to obtain information. :)

To be honest, I'd prefer to do my own independent research and get updated stats... however, i don't know whether my own independent research (in conjunction with the 2012 dixon textbook and the 2010 riley textbook) will be enough to get me a band 6 in economics. =/

I think it may be safer to rely on the textbook stats. =/
What do you think?

I would suggest you to compare your copy (2010 Edition) with the newest one in a bookshop (sneakily) so that you can save money while keeping up with more recent statistics. That's what I usually do :p

There will definitely be new stuff in it on everything that's gone on this year - natural disasters, eurozone crisis, US debt ceiling etc. etc. even if it's just 5 paragraphs. I would recommend getting it as then you won't be stressing before assessment time wondering if people have read stuff in their textbook that you haven't. It's not necessary, it will just make you feel more at ease, and may help if you don't know about a recent event.

Your own independent research is a must. The textbook will not get you a band 6 (unless you get full marks in MC and short answers +60% of the marks in the essays). It will allow you to understand the theory in order to answer multiple choice and short answer questions, as well as cover background knowledge that you will obviously have to put in your essay. However, you must keep up to date with current/recent events and statistics to do well in the essay, as anything in the textbook will be one year out of date.

thanks so much for your tip - i will definitely look out for independent research this year. Did you do this on a regular basis, let's say set a specific time for this research, and was it related to the course material that you were studying at that time? or did you just research statistics and info before assessments?
