im bad at essays, really bad. last year i got 5/20 in an end of year english exam and i know that im going to have to be good at essays for year 11 and 12 otherwise im going fail horribly so? does anyone have any tips or ways to practice? id really appriciate the help
okay, in all honestly if you are struggling to that degree then before anything else you should look at structure
an essay that vaguely answers the question, but is well structured and ordered is pretty much guaranteed 12/20 imo (prolly bit more tbh)
stick with the basics; if you have two texts use 4 paragraphs and 2 concepts. lets say we're talking about control and power as 'themes' for our essay
we'd structure it like
Paragraph 1: Text A - Control
Paragraph 2: Text B - Control
Paragraph 3: Text A - Power
Paragraph 4: Text B - Power
In the paragraphs themselves, use the paragraph structure like this
1. Topic sentence
2. Statement #1
3. Backed up with QTE (Quote, Technique, Effect)
4. Statement #2
5. Backed up with QTE (Quote, Technique, Effect)
6. Statement #3
7. Backed up with QTE (Quote, Technique, Effect)
8. Link back to the question.
Do this for every paragraph.
For the intro, have a thesis statement (a big overarching argument), and introduce your texts. Mention both your themes (control, power in this case) and how they relate to the thesis. Avoid mentioning the plot of either texts as much as possible.
Reword the intro and use it as a conclusion.
That's about this gist of it, if want me to try explain something more specific, feel free to ask.
