Maths does not interest me. I barely listen in class, get nothing out of whatever the hell the teacher talks about, and my recent assessment (which I did on 1 hour of sleep and 0 hours of study) was highly unimpressive. Many teachers talk about dropping maths as the "end of the world." It's only General, for goodness sake!

I am doing 13 units - Advanced and Extension English, Ancient History, Business Studies, Society and Culture, Visual Arts and the waste of time that is... General Mathematics. I am hoping to do a media and communications based course at university next year (which will require an incredibly high UAI... I want to go to Sydney, and there it is 98.05), so maths isn't really necessary for anything I want to do.

Do you recommended dropping it, so I can focus on my other 11 units? Do you think, looking at my subject choices, that such a UAI is attainable? (Keeping in mind that many of last terms assessments were not the best, but that was due to the stress of a family member being in hospital.) Can I still redeem myself, although the first assessment marks weren't exactly fantastic?

Thanks for the advice :)

If you do bad and don't like it would be a good idea to drop it

From what you said there, you really should drop it, enough said. However having said that, you can still redeem yourself from the remaining 11 units that you are doing, hopefully you will feel somewhat motivated to work harder now after dropping your least favourite subject. Good luck. ;)

If you hate it, drop it. Your UAI isn't going to be based on which subjects you picked, but on how well you did in them. I think you would be much better off with 11 units of subjects that you actually like.

Not that scaling should influence your choice of subjects, but General Maths scales quite little, so if you suck raw, you suck scaled.

If you have no reason for studying maths, and you do not enjoy it or do well in it then you should definitely drop it.

Also, don't worry too much about how your other subjects scale - a good UAI is most certainly doable with that combination. Its also more than possible to turn your marks around if you work hard, even a 98 is achievable. And lastly, its not the end of the world if you don't get 98, there are plenty of other media and communications courses which are just as reputable(many would argue they are more reputable) but more accessable.

if you so vehemously hate it, its cutting into your time which could be better spent on ur other subjects.

and yes, a 98.05 is still attainable if you work hard, maintain the grades and high marks.

i do remember a guy in my year who did get a pretty high UAI, BUT it was maths that dragged him down a bit. if he didnt do maths (and did another humanities subject, say, modern history), he would definitely gotten 100 UAI.

so therefore, unanimously, drop it. hands down. period.

Sweet, thanks guys.

I better get my arse to the careers advisor to get it dropped before my next class, as I think my teacher is getting sick of me not doing any work and distrupting others!

:)
