Excuse the paint-job. I typed in relatively-high marks on one side, then kept most of the marks but left the bottom two at 2 on the other.

I thought that the HSC was an average of your subject marks. However, it seems that I could skip two exams as long as I do well in the others.

Can anyone explain this?

I tried it with only the basic 10 subjects, the atar drops, but isnt greatly affected by the 2.

It obviously isn't an average. You could still beat a lot of people in the state if your better scaling subjects did well and you you skipped general maths and other poorer subjects.

That is happening because only your top 10 units are used to calculate your ATAR.

ATAR is a rank of students scaled aggregates.
In that calculation only 1 unit of either General maths or Industrial is counting towards the calculation, so it doesn't affect the scaled aggregate that much. (Aggregate is out of 500, with each of the 10 units contributing 50 to the total). That and good marks in the other subjects are giving you a still relatively good aggregate compared with the rest of the cohort. Remember ATAR is a rank.
