Always do short answer first, it's so much easier and quicker to finish up short answer and still get the marks first than it is to finish an essay especially if you get carried away with writing an essay. Often times I've noticed if you've practised a lot with short answer papers, you will find that in Trials / HSC you will finish the short answer way before the expected time (you should dedicate 40 min per section) which gives you more time to work on your essay

what masaken said and also I like to read the essay question and think about it while doing my short answer so I can think about what parts of the text are the most relevant

My trials were a little different; we did Paper 1 on a Friday so that we had the whole weekend to work on Paper 2 which was on the following Monday. On that weekend I remember memorising Module A + Module B + Module C (Creative and Reflection + Discursive and Reflection) and it only took me around 2-3 hours (to memorise 4 compositions) with my method. The day before Paper 1 I memorised my Common Module essay in around 40 minutes, but just remember my method might not work for everyone. I highly recommend it though if you feel it'll help you and you're crunched for time prior to your exams. All the best for Trials!

i did it sentence by sentence until i memorised one sentence, went to the next sentence and memorised that, then recited it to make sure i memorised both, but i broke down my essay into colour-coded chunks which made it easier for me to memorise + recited it while pacing around in my room
i don't know if it'll work for you but i have trouble with sitting still and just focusing on the task at hand which is why writing it out never worked for me (which is a method a lot of people use so that might work for you)
