UAC misunderstanding? (1 Viewer)

Ok, so I thought that with UAC, you basically have to guess what ATAR you will get and make your preferences around your estimate.

And this is true for the December round, as you don't know your ATAR and you have to choose a preference.

But you get your ATAR results on 15th of December, and then the next two rounds (including the main round) need to have preferences handed in by the 1st of January, and the 6th of January.
Why would you choose preferences then at all? Won't you be able to see instantly the ATAR requirement you will need to get into the course? Is it not just pick what course you want to do at these round, as opposed from pick what course you think you can get into?

I must be missing something. Do you not get the ATAR requirements for courses? Do they not guarantee entry if you meet those requirements?

Preferences are taken much into account when there is too much demand for a course. Your preference should be based according to your want to do a subject + the possibility of you getting into that subject.

Those cutoffs are for 2016, they are not for you. Unless a university specifies a guaranteed entry score for 2017, you are competing against everyone for a position.

The cutoffs indicate the ATAR of the student who received the last available position. If there are still vacancies, then an indicative cutoff will be published. You will know if you have an offer before you know the cutoff for 2017.

You should definitely select and order your preferences based on what you want to do, not based on the ATAR cutoff for the previous cohort.

Unless you are concerned with running out of slots on your pref list, just put in all the courses you want to do in the order you like to get them.

If your ATAR isn't good enough for say the top 3 your 4th pref practically becomes your 1st pref as if you hadn't put in the top 3. Nothing to lose.
