Hey all I was just curious as to what goes on with the two english subjects when it comes to the UAI. I was playing around with SAM the other day and I saw that English advanced and English standard scale the same. Because of this wouldn't most people want to do standard as it is easier to get a higher mark which would lead to a better UAI?
But then I saw the spread of marks and found that there was no one who got a band 6 and only a couple of people in band 5. Is that because people who do standard just simply aren't that good at english (this is a generalised statement, no offence intended) or is this because the course is simply made so its impossible to get a band 6 mark making English advanced the prefered choice if you can do english reasonably well.
Thnx

No.

It is your raw marks that are scaled for inclusion in your UAI, not the marks reported by the Board. As it is just as easy or difficult to obtain a given raw mark in both Standard and Advanced, no advantage is gained with respect to the UAI by choosing one course over the other.

The Board 'aligns' raw marks in different ways for Standard and Advanced before reporting them, but these aligned marks aren't used in UAI calculations. (Refer to this flowchart.)

Why is this the case? If the content of Standard is easier, wouldn't talented students be able to score higher marks in Standard than dealing with the more difficult content of Advanced?

The distribution of marks on the (allegedly) "easier" Standard paper is reshaped to the distribution of marks gained by the Standard students on the common Area of Study paper.

The same is done for the Advanced paper and the Advanced students. This removes any variations in difficulty between the two different Modules papers.

The Area Of Study Paper 1 assessment should be where the English (Advanced) students gain a slight (if not great) advantage since they supposedly have a better ability in English and should generally obtain a larger distribution of higher marks than the students of English (Standard).

In the standards setting prcoedure, the performance band standards should exactly the same for both English (Standard) and English (Advanced). This means that it should require an equal amount of effort and equal quality of answers to achieve band 6 in both English (Standard) and English (Advanced).

(N.B: Exactly the same questions were asked and answered in the Year 11 Preliminary forum)

This is true - but interestingly, the raw band cut-offs chosen by the judges for each course are different.
