hi,

I'd thought that Sydney Uni didn't offer Undergraduate Medicine, but I recently heard from someone that they had started (either this year or last year) offering it, with about 15 places...

does anyone know if this is true, and if it isn't true, which course my source was talking about?

thanks for any info

No UMAT or GAMSAT is required, though the latter must be taken in order to have a shot at med scholarships when you actually start the medicine component - basically the course is for at least 7 years in duration with a 3 yr science component (then possible honours year) followed by 4 years of med. The major entry criterion is a UAI of 99.95 pretty much. The other criteria are posted on the combined science medicine website - they're looking for a band 6 in an english subject as well. The course is research oriented, so unless you want to actively do research along with practising medicine or as a replacement for practise, the course isn't for you. That's the most important aspects of the course. I can't give you too many more details because even the med faculty don't have too clear an idea about the future. :p

yep, the honours year is a normal, standard honours year in whatever department you wish to do it- it's a fully-fledged science degree and then a fully-fledged med degree. The med faculty themselves allow for the honours year as an option in delaying entry into the med degree itself, and are prepared to continue paying scholarship money during that year. I expect pretty much all of us will do an honours year at this stage.

yeh 8 years, though there is that combined MBBS/PhD program where you do 2 years of medicine, take 2 years out to complete a PhD and then finish off the med degree in 2 years. I'll decide if I want to apply for that or not on the basis of my honours year and whether I do well in that etc. So a minimum of 7 years, a maximum of 10 years realistically.

I'm considering the BMedSc (Hons)/MBBS at UWA...might do something in anatomy or nanotech. :D

But it's an extra year, and I'd have to drop down to the cohort below... three years older! :(

if you did honours, that would make it 8 yrs..right, meaning you'd go over the 7-year HECS limit right?

OK that sounds a lot more promising that BSc(Hon) MBBS, then taking another 4 years for a PhD, although 10 is still a bit long.

hmm
UWA and Adel have MBBS/BMedSci (hons) in 6-7 yrs .. Melb 7 yrs..
UQ has a MBBS/PhD 6 yrs..

honestly to get the trifecta (MBBS/BMedSci (hons)/PhD) is minimum 10 yrs.. and u still need to do min 2 yr PG and 5 yrs specialty training all full time... so 17 yrs to get a decent degree and hopefully have a life .. ill be 35 if i did tat..

NUS in singapore has a 8yr MBBS/PhD tho..

Whoa, 17 years, plus 13 years of school, that's 30. Crazy. Glad nit is doing it and I'm not.
