are free electives just any subject that don't have GEN(numbers#) in it's title? i'm wondering because the courses i'm interested in don't have GEN in it's title but when i click on course attributes it is listed as 'general education.' if it has general education in its course attributes but not in title would this be considered a free elective or is this considered general education?

i emailed unsw about this just now because i did call them earlier and asked a slightly different question but realised this after i ended the call. plus i have work soon and want to relax + too lazy to call again.

That doesnt sound right. You do 48UOC a year so youre saying 6 of the 8 courses you're doing in FIRST YEAR are free electives??? send the sample program

crazy. to answer your question, as long as they are not GEN coded its fine, they can still be general education on the handbook, just cant have a course name that starts with GEN

Yeah! Just a heads up, a lot of GEN coded courses will also have non-GEN coded identical courses, for example if you want to take GENS1111 as a free elective but cant as it is GEN coded, you can take the identical course BABS1111. You can't do both courses though as they are listed as exclusions courses of each other on the handbook (If you've done one, you can't enroll in the other).

By the way, welcome to UNSW! I'm not sure if you've figured this out yet, but the course handbook will be a great tool you can use to make sure you're aware of the requirements of your degree; your course's one is here. If you click on any subject, you'll be able to see what terms it runs (at least normally, but it seems like some of your core psych courses are a bit silly and don't say), and a general overview of the course. If you want a more in-depth understanding of how the course is marked and what classes you'll have in it, you can check the Course Outline. (if your course doesn't show up, its because it hasn't run yet this year, but you can just switch the year back to the previous year and look through the sorts of assessments you'll be doing - it doesn't change much from year to year). This is really useful when picking free electives and Gen EDs to make sure the course is a good fit.

ohh okay sweet i understand now! thank you lots, i'm so excited to study at unsw as it's my dream uni! i appreciate the help as i was so confused at first on enrolment and my dad who went to unsw in like the 90s has no idea how any of this works now lol so i was kind of on my own. yes i agree some of the core psych courses are very silly and vague with its details but i'll yolo it and figure it out. thanks for linking the course outline website, i love how clear and concise it is compared to the handbook.

thank you so much once again you legend, you're so kind! 😊😊
